Books Q1 2009

What with having to get through the New Yorker and needing to find enough time for music, I don't read as many books as I'd like. But here's what I've read so far in 2009 (all free, courtesy of my local public library):
  • Jennifer 8 Lee, The Fortune Cookie Chronicles: Good light history of Chinese food in America, by the NY Times reporter with my favorite middle name.

  • Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons, The Watchmen: Not as good as I remember it being 20 years ago, with lots of bad gender politics I'd forgotten, and a distinct whiff of arrested adolescence. But still plenty groundbreaking. Still echoing through mainstream culture.

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 8, Vol. 1-2: Reminds me why Buffy was the greatest show on TV. Joss Whedon and the BtVS writers are telling Season 8 as a series of comics, collected in 4 volumes so far. I love these characters and this writing more than anything on TV since (yes, more than the Wire, more than BSG).
