Ultimate Amplifier Quest: Boulder 865 Reopens the Contest

Boulder 865 integrated amp
A few months ago, I thought I was done with my efforts to reconfigure my stereo set up. But the tube amplifier I ultimately settled on proves to be too much of a space heater for my little listening room. Sounds great, but it's like a sweat lodge in there after an hour or so.

So I've decided to give the Boulder 865 -- a solid-state design -- a chance to take the crown from my all-tube system. And it's an integrated amp (both preamp and amp -- one box instead of two), at that. Simplifying things seemed attractive (ironically, I had an integrated when this upgrade odyssey began), and I got a great price for it. Boulder is an American high-end audio company based in, naturally, Boulder, CO. The 865 is about the cheapest thing in their product line, 150 watts/channel, about 40 lbs of silver-grey understatedness.

Still too early to have a strong opinion, but I can't afford to keep all this gear, so it's only a matter of time till someone ends up for sale.
