Fewer new artists on my list than in previous years, but still lots of great music. Available for streaming at your choice of Spotify, Mog, Rdio, Rhapsody. Or check out my playlist of my favorite songs of 2012 at 8tracks.com.
- Fiona Apple, The Idler Wheel....: Fiona Apple was the best live show I saw this year, and seeing her made me appreciate the album in a new way. I've never seen anyone deliver so many lyrics through clenched teeth. What a remarkable "come-back" album.
- Cat Power, Sun: Cat Power, on the other hand, was the worst live show I saw all year, but I still love the record.
- Shearwater, Animal Joy: where was this on all the end-of-year lists? What's wrong with you people?
- Norah Jones, Little Broken Hearts: teaming up with Dangermouse on an album about heartbreak was a good idea for Norah Jones.
- Kaki King, Glow: she's back to instrumental guitar again, but she keep getting better. Also a great live show at Yoshi's SF.
- Amanda Palmer, Theatre Is Evil: the Kickstarter hit of the year, and I'm proud to have contributed to it.
- Leonard Cohen, Old Ideas: wow, he still has it, in spades.
- Regina Spektor, What We Saw from the Cheap Seats: that's two years in a row that Ms. Spektor has made my top albums list.
- Exitmusic, Passage: another one I was shocked not to see on more critics' end-of-year lists.
- Sharon Van Etten, Tramp: good to hear young women with guitars picking up where their ancestors left off. :-)
