Wine Tasting: Grüner Veltliner/Vouvray

Two white varietals that have very little in common, other than their relative obscurity (at least compared to Chardonnay and Sauv Blanc). Consensus favorites were #3 and #4, as well as the dessert wine that we ended with (lychee, lychee, lychee!). Ran a little short this time -- sorry about that! All of these were from K&L Wines, which may still have some of them in stock.

  1. 2003 Jager Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Ried Klaus (Was $15.99, sale $8.99): disappointing

  2. 2004 Leithner Grüner Veltliner Loess (Was $13.99 sale $5.99): quite nice, simple, unobjectionable

  3. 2005 Prager Grüner Veltliner Hinter der Burg Federspiel $21.99: crisp, refreshing, a winner

  4. 2005 Prager Grüner Veltliner Smaragd "Achleiten" $41.99: rich, tongue-coating, serious wine

  5. 2005 Hiedler Grüner Veltliner Löss $14.99: crisp, hint of complexity, a good value

  6. 2005 Schloss Gobelsburg Grüner Veltliner "Steinsetz" $21.99: nice, but falls short of #3 at the same price

  7. 1990 Gauthier-Lhomme Domaine du Viking Vouvray Tendre $22.99

  8. 2002 Gauthier-Lhomme Domaine du Viking Vouvray Tendre $16.99: the best of the three

  9. 1999 Gauthier-Lhomme Domaine du Viking Vouvray Tendre $16.99

  10. 2003 Andrew Rich Gewurztraminer Ice Wine (.375ml) $21.99: lychee, lychee, lychee! awesome
