Live Music Q4 2023

The annual tally of concerts comes to 48. An average of almost a show every week. Over the past 19 years, only last year beat that figure (53!). Pretty damn good, especially since I've been back at full time employment this quarter. I suppose I bought most of these tickets before that happened, so the pace will likely slow from here. I've only got 5 scheduled for Q1 so far.

Highlights included the LA Master Chorale, which put on one of the most moving choral performances I've ever seen. Then again, The Tallis Scholars also delivered their usual transcendent choral experience, too. James Blake was great, despite a lackluster album. Ditto for Wilco. And I'm glad I saw Depeche Mode, for what will likely be the last time (I saw them last in 1987!). Same for Peter Gabriel. No longer at the height of their powers, but a nice exercise in nostalgia.

As usual, favorites in bold:

  • Peter Gabriel
  • Wilco
  • James Blake
  • Los Angeles Master Chorale: Music to Accompany a Departure
  • Courtney Barnett
  • Margaret Glaspy
  • American Railroad; Silkroad Ensemble with Rhiannon Giddens
  • Tallis Scholars: While Shepherds Watched
  • Depeche Mode
  • The Dresden Dolls
